Don’t get caught by a sucker punch when you touch gloves.
A year or two back, a friend of mine had his first MMA fight and I’ll never forget it for an unusual reason. Even though he’s built like a Mr Olympia contestant, he’s a really gentle guy by nature and actually quite religious. He got in the cage and when the ref started the fight he went forward to touch gloves. As he leaned forward the other guy sucker punched him and the whole crowd boo’d but my buddy had already taken the cheap shot. When the next round began, I couldn’t believe it, the same thing happened again. I was totally disgusted as even though I love to fight, it is a sport after all.
I just don’t believe there’s a place in modern MMA for conduct like that but the guy that had libertied my friend seemed to think it was a big laugh. My friend actually went on to win the fight after the F@#khead gassed and couldn’t take the beating but it’s something that’s been at the back of my mind for years. I was quite pleased when I found this Jeff Joslin video on how to not to get sucker punched when touching gloves in the cage. Even though the sport should be clean, you never know when someone will be an @#$hole and throw a cheap shot so you may as well be prepared.
Remember to treat it like a Jab and then circle away from his power hand. You can be a gentleman and still stay safe.
